We challenge competitors to create compelling visions for a new memorial feature within the Grove in Golden Gate Park. Because the effects of the AIDS virus are so varied, and those affected by it are from such diverse walks of life, we believe that it is important to respect visitors' needs to experience the Grove in a variety of ways. Therefore, the goal of the competition is to create a memorial feature that will:

Memorialize those lost to AIDS
Stimulate creative thinking on memorializing AIDS
Promote hope, healing, and remembrance for those touched by AIDS
Increase awareness of the global tragedy of the AIDS epidemic
Educate the public about AIDS
Ensure that lessons learned are not forgotten
Raise awareness of the Grove as a national treasure
Provide a provocative and beautiful feature within the Grove's landscape
Secure, through design acclaim, the care of the Grove into the future
