By Layne Varholdt, National AIDS Memorial Grove Board Member
As a long-term volunteer and current board member of the National AIDS Memorial Grove with over 20 years of overall committed service to the organization, I continue to walk with the Grove’s team at AIDS Walk San Francisco every year. I walk to remember all my brothers and sisters who have been lost to AIDS. I walk to support all those who have the courage to live every day with HIV / AIDS. I also walk in this unified effort to support all those lives that have been touched by AIDS and are here in support of others. For these reasons, I am particularly proud that the Grove is currently leading the way as the top fundraising team of AIDS Walk San Francisco!
The annual 10K fundraising walk has been vital in the continued fight against AIDS for the past 23 years, benefiting both individuals and the overall community. In 2014, 20,000 participants, many of whom were members of nearly 700 corporate and community teams, raised more than $2.2 million for Bay Area AIDS service organizations. This year, AIDS Walk San Francisco will benefit Project Inform and dozens of other organizations that work to stop new infections and support people living with HIV/AIDS.
The Grove salutes Quest Diagnostics for stepping up as the Premier Sponsor of AIDS Walk San Francisco once again! Quest Diagnostics, the world leader in diagnostic services, is collaborating directly with several nonprofit organizations in Northern California, including the Grove, Project Inform, API Wellness, and Rafiki Wellness in support of HIV/AIDS research, education and awareness, screening and care across the diverse communities of the Greater Northern California area.
Quest Diagnostics has planned many unique activities throughout the day both at its booth and along the course. Activities include body/face painting tables, a dedication station where walkers can publicly recognize those they are walking in honor/memory of, and a scavenger hunt along the walk route with prizes benefitting well-deserving organizations.
It is still not too late to donate to this year’s walk on July 19, as we are very close to reaching our $30,000 goal. All funds raised by Grove board members and staff will directly benefit the Grove. It’s simple – just click here to help us reach our goal!
