World AIDS Day 2007

"The Many Faces of AIDS"

Ruth Brinker and Charles King to be honored for Efforts to Assist Those Afflicted

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – This year's World AIDS Day will mark the 26th anniversary of the fight against AIDS.  The observance will be held at the National AIDS Memorial on Saturday, December 1st,  from noon to 2:00 p.m. The San Francisco Bay Area’s largest World AIDS Day remembrance ceremony has been held at the Memorial for the last 14 years.  This year’s theme is "The Many Faces of AIDS.”

The keynote speaker is Charles King, president of New York’s Housing Works, the largest community-based AIDS Service Organization in the U.S.  Housing Works is a minority-controlled, not-for-profit organization that provides a full range of services including housing, health care, mental health services, chemical dependency services, legal advocacy, and job training and placement for homeless men, women, and children living with HIV/AIDS.  Housing Works serves over 5,000 people every year.

For over a decade, Charles has traveled North America encouraging the development of social enterprise as a vehicle for social change.  More recently, Charles has traveled to various states, meeting with activists, providers and people living with HIV/AIDS in over 100 cities on the behalf of the Campaign to End AIDS.

This year's program will also include a guided meditation of hope, renewal and remembrance with Reverend Maureene Bass, minister for 11 years at Unity Church of San Francisco.   San Francisco vocalist, Shannon Day, accompanied on piano by Naomi Sanchez, will provide music.

The 2007 Grove Award and Donor Appreciation Award will be presented at the World AIDS Day ceremony.
This year, the National AIDS Memorial Grove's HIV/AIDS Service Award is presented to Ruth Brinker, founder of San Francisco’s Project Open Hand, the country’s first food service organization for people living with AIDS.  In 1985, Ruth started making dinner in her own kitchen for seven neighbors with AIDS.

Demand for Ruth’s meals grew, and with volunteer help, Ruth started Project Open Hand.  For Ruth, it was always about love.  “I did what any decent person would have done under these circumstances,” she says.  From Ruth’s original act of compassion evolved an organization that today feeds over 6,000 people a year in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The Donor Appreciation Award is presented to Wells Fargo.  Wells Fargo has been in the forefront of funding AIDS service organizations in the Bay Area and beyond.  In the early days of the epidemic, the bank took a brave step forward in the corporate world by becoming a leader in providing funding to a number of AIDS causes.  Wells Fargo has also funded the National AIDS Memorial over the years, most notably the annual World AIDS Day observance as well as other special events.
