Below are examples of quilts that Chevron employees and retirees have designed and developed that are held and displayed at multiple Chevron locations. Each quilt has its own story, and the themes have evolved throughout the years – just as the response has through new medical interventions, science and technology.
Since the mid-1980s, Chevron has been a leader in the global fight against HIV/AIDS, joining other U.S. companies to promote education and reduce workplace stigma. In 2005, Chevron launched an enterprise-wide HIV/AIDS policy -- the first of its kind in the energy industry-- addressing harassment, benefits, pre-employment HIV testing, and treatment, ensuring a non-discriminatory workplace that honors confidentiality.
Since 2016, Chevron has partnered with the National AIDS Memorial by supporting its efforts to educate, reduce stigma, and add
The Memorial is the steward of the AIDS Memorial Quilt, a powerful symbol that continues to educate through its history, stories, and programs. In support of the AIDS Quilt and searching for its own tool to increase awareness, Chevron’s Health & Medical team began reaching out to employees and retirees, asking for volunteers to create a collection of Quilt panels. The initial intent was to educate, provide a place for remembrance, and offer a space for social connection.
In 1993, a group of Chevron volunteer quilters in the San Francisco Bay Area started making two Quilt blocks to commemorate Chevron employees who lost their lives to AIDS. The first Chevron Quilt block was submitted to the NAMES Project Foundation to be part of the AIDS Quilt, and to date, there are two Chevron blocks in the AIDS Quilt. This Chevron initiative continued in the workplace, and since the early 2000’s, employees and retirees from around the globe have made a quilt most years, unveiled at Chevron’s World AIDS Day events.
The HIV/AIDS crisis, however, still impacts tens of thousands of Americans each year. Chevron is proud to maintain its commitment to raising awareness and fighting stigma for a future free of HIV/AIDS.
